Miley's Luck Ran Out

If you don't know the saga behind our 3-legged hamster, Miley, you'll have to go to the first blog I wrote here! In a nutshell, our daughter's 4-H project last year was a Roborovski's DwarfHamster, and when I say "dwarf," I mean "dwarf." And really fast - this teeny rodent was speedy quick! Anyway, she had an accident in her running wheel and completely lost a leg, but she surprised us, survived and adapted.

Well, Miley, the hamster, has come to the end of her journey with us. We found her curled up in her cage last Wednesday, dead. Emily was just beside herself and cried non-stop all evening. Even during the night, she would wake up unconsolably crying. After a couple of days, she was feeling better, but still lamenting Miley's death whenever it creeped into her memory.

In the meantime, I'd mentioned it to one of Trevor's teachers. I said we may get a rat for a pet next, knowing they were more hardy and would be easier for the kids to play with. She lit up at this and mentioned that there were two behaviorial study rats in the lab upstairs that had outlived their usefulness and would have a tragic end if they weren't adopted soon. After consulting with Kelly, I signed the adoption papers for two white rats, and made arrangements to pick them up on Saturday. I took Emily with me, but didn't tell her what we were doing. She was SO surprised, and SO excited!

We brought the furry things home and she and Trevor promptly dragged them out and played with them for a while. After deep consideration, they named them: SnowBall and SnowMan
I'm still not quite used to them, but the kids really LOVE them, and as long as they live longer than Miley did and they keep all their limbs, I'm OK with them.

Pictures to come soon!
