My aunt and uncle and cousin live in NW Houston and are "camping indoors" right now while their electricity is out. When Hurricane Rita was scheduled to hit, thousands upon thousands of people in Galveston and Southern Houston evacuated, but NW Houston was told to "in-place shelter." Luckily my aunt and uncle have a generator, so they still have a fridge running, some electricity, and some running water. They also gassed everything up before the storm. They'll be all right, but it really does suck. The pictures of Houston, and especially Galveston, make me want to cry. I can't imagine that area ever being the same again. I've spent many vacations on Galveston, some with my kids now. It's crazy what Mother Nature can do.
My Dad lives in Nacogdoches, TX, with his wife, Ruth. They are also without electricity. However, they are not in as good of shape. No generator, most of the town is down, and they are hurting for their early morning coffee every day! Dad says he's looking for a camp stove to use for cooking, but hasn't found one. In retrospect, it's probably a good thing! Maybe I can find a battery-operated coffee maker to overnight him...
